Minister Zane E. Lightbourne spent twenty two (22) years as an educator, starting his career as a History, Geography and Social Studies Teacher. He received his early education on the island of Eleuthera at Green Castle Primary, Rock Sound Primary and Preston H. Albury High Schools respectively.
He achieved both an Associate of Arts and a Bachelor of Science Degree in Social Studies, History and Geography at the College/University of The Bahamas, where he also achieved his Teacher’s Certification.
Early in his career, Minister Lightbourne was appointed Assistant Senior Master, and was eventually promoted to Senior Master at the St. George’s High School in 2012. He was later posted as Senior Master to the Jack Hayward High School, and Government High School, and later as Vice Principal to the RM Bailey High School where he served for two (2) years.
In 2016, Minister Lightbourne was posted to the School Management Section at the Ministry of Education Headquarters where he served as Senior Education Officer with charge over Post of Responsibility and Post School Allowances. He was also appointed to the Government’s negotiating team for collective bargaining and Labour Liaison Officer for the Department of Education.
Minister Lightbourne has extensive years of service as a Labour advocate for working people. He served as Executive Member, Vice President and Acting President of the Bahamas Union of Teachers (BUT); Secretary General to the Bahamas Educators Managerial Union (BEMU); General Secretary of the National Congress of Trade Unions Bahamas (NCTUB); and the Public Relations Chairman to the Caribbean Union of Teachers (CUT).
Minister Lightbourne served several years as the President of the Board of Directors of Lucayan Towers North in Freeport Grand Bahama, and is Co-Founder and Chairman of the Educators Pension Plan Company.
Minister Lightbourne is John Thompson Certified in negotiations, and Promoting Organizational Renewal, Sustainability, and Success.
Minister Lightbourne is also certified in Industrial Tribunal Procedure and Practice, which is a skill qualification for representing clients at the Bahamas Industrial Tribunal.
In September of 2021, Minister Lightbourne was elected as the Member of Parliament for the constituency of Yamacraw and was also appointed to the Cabinet of the Commonwealth of The Bahamas as Minister of State for Education and Technical and Vocational Training.
Minister Lightbourne is presently the Minister of State for the Environment and Natural Resources where his current portfolio encompasses, Geological Surveys, Forestry, Environmental Control, Solid Waste collection and Disposal, Public Sanitation, Landfills, and Vector Control.
